Mackenzie Club to Jolivet Race Village

  • CP6 to CP7: CP6 at Mackenzie Club to CP7 at St Josephine’s bridge 

BRIEFING NOTES FOR YOU TO GIVE YOUR RIDERS WHILST AT CP6:

  1. All riders should try and eat proper food at Mackenzie club.
  2. If there is sufficient daylight remove batteries and lights and leave in the support vehicle to recharge. There is no point carrying extra weight if you don’t need too.  
  3. They need to dress appropriately, they may want to undress a little
  4. If it is a clear day and the sun is rising it may be a good idea to wear a peak cap as you will be riding directly into the rising sun.
  5. Tell your riders that you cannot follow your team from CP6 to CP7 as they head off east towards the mighty Umkomaas Valley. You will see them in approx. 90 minutes.
  6. They head east and downstream along the many beautiful trails of the Umko Drop.
  7. All support vehicles need to travel directly to CP7 at St Josephine’s Bridge via Ixopo.
  8. YOUR RIDERS HAVE 38KM TO RIDE BEFORE YOU SEE THEM AT CP7.

SUPPORT VEHICLE DIRECTIONS: Travel Time: 50 min (60.8 km) via R612 and R56

  • On exiting Mackenzie Club gates do not follow your riders east but turn right and travel west back towards the R612 for 3km
  • At the R612 tar road turn left onto R612 and travel south east to Ixopo for 5 km
  • Turn left onto R56 at the Ixopo Cross Roads and travel for 8 km
  • 200m before crossing over the St Josephine’s bridge at the Umkomaas River turn left into the farm of Mike Woodburn.
  • Follow the farm road for 200m down to the Umkomaas River where you will find your riders coming over the floating bridge on the Umkomaas river from the North

SUPPORTER TIPS AT CP7:

  1. If it is wet your riders may want to wash their bikes. They can do this at the slipway into the Umkomaas river.
  2. Remember to send short videos through which we will post on our social media channels.
  3. Take a photo of your team at the feather banner at CP8 and be sure to WhatsApp it through to the race office as soon as possible.
  • CP7 to CP8: CP7 at St Josephine’s bridge to CP8 at Copes Gravel Road

BRIEFING NOTES FOR YOU TO GIVE YOUR RIDERS WHILST AT CP7:

  1. CP7 is private property please be respectful and considerate of Mike’s farming operations.
  2. If there has been some mud along this section it may be a good idea to wash your bikes at this point.
  3. The valley along this section between CP6 and CP7 of the route is magnificent. Tell your riders to appreciate the beauty of the wild Umkomaas.
  4. It is however a good pull up Steve’s Spruit which criss-crosses the Ixopo River many times.
  5. Unfortunately support vehicles cannot follow your team from this point as they head off downstream and along the many beautiful trails next to the Umkomaas River. They then ride up Steve’s Spruit and the Ixopo river valley crossing many little wooden bridges.
  6. All support vehicles need to travel directly to CP8 at Copes Gravel Road.
  7. Remember normal road rules apply at all time during sani2c nonstop.
  8. YOUR RIDERS HAVE 11KM TO RIDE BEFORE YOU SEE THEM AT CP8.

SUPPORT VEHICLE DIRECTIONS: Travel Time: 11 min (8.1 km)

  • Head south back toward the R56 tar road for 160m
  • Turn right onto R56 and travel up the pass for 4 km
  • Turn left onto the Nhlaveni Road and travel south for 6 km
  • Wait on the road side where the ride route joins the gravel road from the east.

SUPPORTER TIPS AT CP8:

  1. Remember to send short videos through which we will post on our social media channels.
  2. Take a photo of your team at the feather banner at CP8 and be sure to WhatsApp it through to the race office as soon as possible.
  3. Get you Music and JBL speaker ready to welcome your team.
  4. You are going to have to motivate your riders at this point as the next section is long and hard.

 CP8 to CP9: CP8 at Copes Gravel Road to CP9 at Halfway Point

BRIEFING NOTES FOR YOU TO GIVE YOUR RIDERS WHILST AT CP8:

  1. From CP8 you will escort your team for over 15km all the way through to CP9.
  2. This is a hard tough section and your riders will find the steep climbs difficult.
  3. They will need lots of encouragement and motivation along this long stretch of gravel road. Use this opportunity wisely and replenish and motivate your team however possible.
  4. Remember that registered seconds are part of the team and can swap out with riders.
  5. If one of the team members is taking strain at this point it may be a good opportunity to sub him and let him recover in the car for this section. REGISTERED SUPPORTS CAN RIDE HIS BIKE. IT CANNOT BE LOADED.
  6. A positive vibe play list is highly recommended along this section of district road.
  7. YOUR RIDERS HAVE 16KM TO RIDE BEFORE YOU SEE THEM AT CP9.

SUPPORT VEHICLE DIRECTIONS: Travel Time: 60min (This will be dependent on the speed of your team) (15.4 km)

  • Head in a Westerly direction for 15.4km
  • Turn left into CP10 which is found just off the gravel road in the shade of the Tall Gum trees

SUPPORTER TIPS to motivate your team whilst driving together with your team between CP8 and CP9:

  1. This is a hard section with 2 really steep climbs.
  2. Bring your motivational A Game. Your team will need it.
  3. A positive vibe play list is highly recommended along this section of district road.
  4. Some members will be grumpy and they will swear about Farmer Glen. Remind them that “nothing worthwhile comes easy” and they will look back on their achievement with pride because of these climbs.
  5. Remember that registered seconds are part of the team and can swap out with riders.
  6. You have time to become a Super Second along this section of road. Offer your riders some of their favourite treats. I.e. A fresh bottle with lots of ice. Biltong, Mango roll etc.
  7. The hard section is not over after reaching CP9 there is still a difficult section up Songololo and Haaibo 1.
  8. Lots of single track ahead after CP9. Mandy’s Mumble, Sally’s Dance, Songololo Haaibo 1 & 2, Philani’s Path and Fisherman’s Trail.
  9. The section through the Highflats plantations before CP10 is flat and fast. It can become a lonely quite section where pairing up and working with other teams may be a good option.
  • CP9 to CP10: CP9 at Halfway Point to CP10 Highflats Church St James Parish

BRIEFING NOTES FOR YOU TO GIVE YOUR RIDERS WHILST AT CP9:

  1. Support vehicles cannot follow their teams from CP9 to CP10 as they head off into narrow plantation paths.
  2. After CP9 there is still a difficult section up Songololo and Haaibo 1.
  3. After these climbs things do become easier as the route flattens towards Highflats Church, the next CP point  
  4. Let your riders stock up well before leaving them at CP9 because they will be on their own for a long while through the single tracks.
  5. YOUR RIDERS HAVE 16KM TO RIDE BEFORE YOU SEE THEM AT CP10. 

SUPPORT VEHICLE DIRECTIONS: Travel Time: 22 minutes’ drive time (18.9 km)

  • From CP10 continue southwest for 1 km
  • Keep left at the Y junction and continue for 1 km to the village of Highflats
  • Turn left onto R612 tar road and travel South East through Highflats village continue for 7 km until you see Highflats Church on your right.
  • Find Highflats St James parish church on your right. Find the race route in the east corner of the church grounds

SUPPORTER TIPS AT CP10:

  1. Your riders have a drag up Knocker Hill for 3 km after leaving Highflats Church there after an easier section on the drop down to Hltankungu.
  2. From Hltankungu to Jolivet please tell your riders to ride on the Unitrans Mile sidewalk all the way down to Jolivet. I.e. they must ride off the tar road on the right-hand side sidewalk.
  3. They must watch for pedestrians (possibly intoxicated) and other road furniture along this section
  4. Please check that your tracking device is placed on your vehicles dashboard. 
  • CP10 to CP11: CP10 at Highflats Church, St James Parish to CP11 Jolivet Race Village

BRIEFING NOTES FOR YOU TO GIVE YOUR RIDERS WHILST AT CP10:

  1. Support vehicles cannot follow your team from this point as they head off onto a disused railway line and narrow paths.
  2. Riders will have a steady climb for the next 3 km from Highflats Church. Your riders have another drag up Knocker Hill.
  3. It is then a relatively easy ride down to Hlatingnkugu.
  4. The last 3,2km along the concrete sidewalk. Riders don’t cross the tar and need to ride on the side walk down to Jolivet Race Village.
  5. From Hltankungu to Jolivet please tell your riders to ride on the Unitrans Mile sidewalk all the way down to Jolivet. I.e. they must ride off the tar road on the right-hand side concrete sidewalk.
  6. They must watch for pedestrians (possibly intoxicated) and other road furniture along this section
  7. You have now broken the back of nonstop and only have the last third left.
  8. Remember normal road rules apply at all time during sani2c nonstop.
  9. YOUR RIDERS HAVE 14KM TO RIDE BEFORE YOU SEE THEM AT CP11.

SUPPORT VEHICLE DIRECTIONS: Travel Time: 13 min (14.1 km)

  • Continue in a south easterly direction on the R612 towards the coast
  • After 7 km look out for the Jolivet Race Village sign on your right
  • Turn right of the tar and travel on gravel for 450 m
  • The Race village is on your left. Enter via the main gates

SUPPORTER TIPS AT CP11:

  1. All riders should try and eat proper food at Jolivet Farm. They will find that in the chill zone.
  2. If there is insufficient daylight left until the next CP point replace batteries and lights.
  3. There is no point carrying extra weight if you don’t need too.  
  4. Riders need to dress appropriately, they may want to start dressing warmly.
  5. Remember to recharge lights and GPS units whenever possible.
  6. There are toilet facilities, hot beverages and electricity at Jolivet Race Village.
  7. There are also shower facilities for those feeling rough at this point.
  8. Remember to send short videos which we will post on our social media channels.
